Huangshanjie Formation

Huangshanjie Fm

Period:
Triassic

Age Interval:
Early-middle Late Triassic, (TJ2, TJ3, TJ4, TJ14a)

Province:
Xinjiang

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Huangshanjie, Fukang County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It was named by Tang Zukui et al. in 1957. Middle formation in the Xiaoquangou Gr.

Synonym: It was named Huangshan Street Layer when it was named, and the age was set as the Late Triassic World. In 1960, Yang Shizhong was renamed the formation. In 1981, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Regional Stratigraphic Table Compilation Group only referred to the lower part of this group as the Huangshanjie Formation.

Lithology and Thickness

It is composed of gray, gray-green, gray-black fine sandstone, siltstone, mudstone interbedded, interbedded with gray thin limestone, and black carbonaceous shale at the bottom. There are yellow-green sandstones with conglomerate at the bottom near Huangshan Street and Urumqi. The thickness is 371.3 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Fine-grained sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The bottom is marked by black carbonaceous shale, which is conformable contact with the underlying Karamay Fm (Kelamayi Fm). Some glutenites (= gravel-sediment) in some areas may be false conformable contact.

Upper contact

The top is conformable contact with the Haojiagou Fm

Regional extent

This formation is widely distributed and can be seen in the outcrops and boreholes of the Junggar Basin, Turpan Basin, and Tarim Basin. The thickness varies between 91-442 m.

Age

In 1980, Zhao Xijin determined its age as the early Late Triassic based on the vertebrate fossils contained in this group. In 1986, the Institute of Geology of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences and the Scientific Research Institute of Xinjiang Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources classified its age as the Late Triassic based on the spore and pollen fossils contained in this group.
